By showing this roughness, it displays an example of what the soldiers had to endure during the Soviet war. It's also extremely important to note this photograph's appeal to pathos. Not only is it shocking to see a man flying in the air from an explosion on the left-hand side of the image, but a man lies seemingly lifeless on the right-hand side as well. This disturbing aspect is an example of balance. The white background provides a strong contour, outlining the profile of this soldier flying away from an explosion.
